The readiness score, when you understand its limitations, is the most useful single number in a hormone optimization client’s daily data stack.

The subscription model is more expensive over time but the training-load context it adds is worth it for high-volume athletes and men who need to understand when they are accumulating fatigue between bloodwork draws.

Quick Review: Garmin Fenix 8

The most complete training and HRV device if you also want GPS, advanced workout metrics, and a battery that actually lasts. Less sleep-stage accuracy than Oura. Better for the client who needs all metrics in one device and does not want to manage multiple subscriptions.

  • Best for: Active clients who train and want HRV without a separate ring; travel-friendly durability
  • Accuracy caveat: Sleep staging weaker than Oura; HRV from optical sensor is close to chest strap but not identical
  • Cost: $800-1,100 depending on model; no subscription
  • Would I recommend it: Conditionally — excellent if you want one device; not the best standalone sleep tracker

I get asked about wearables constantly. Which one to buy. Whether the sleep stages are accurate. Whether any of this actually matters for hormone optimization or whether it is expensive habit-tracking dressed up as health data. My answers have evolved over six years of recommending specific devices to specific clients at PowerandBulk.com. They are not “buy everything” and they are not “the data is noise.” They land somewhere in the middle that depends on who the client is and what problem the device is supposed to solve.

What follows is the honest breakdown of which devices I actually use in practice, why I recommend them, what they cannot tell you, and the three clients whose experiences shaped my current thinking.

Why Wearables Matter for Hormone Optimization

The gap between bloodwork draws is the problem wearables solve. I run clients on bloodwork every 8 to 12 weeks. Between those draws, the protocol is running blind. Something can go wrong in week 4 of a 12-week block and I will not see it until week 12 when the bloodwork reveals the damage. A wearable gives me daily data that catches problems before they compound.

HRV is the primary metric I care about. Heart rate variability is the most reliable non-invasive proxy for autonomic nervous system balance, which is upstream of cortisol, which is upstream of testosterone. A sustained HRV drop over two weeks tells me something is suppressing recovery before the testosterone has had time to reflect it. The wearable catches the cause. Sleep quality is the second metric. About 70% of daily testosterone production happens during sleep, concentrated in the REM and slow-wave phases. A client whose deep sleep is averaging 45 minutes is not going to optimize testosterone regardless of what his supplement stack looks like. The wearable tells me whether his sleep is producing the conditions for hormonal recovery before the next bloodwork draw.

The third metric is training load – how much physiological stress is accumulating relative to recovery capacity. Whoop’s strain-to-recovery ratio is the best commercial implementation of this concept I have seen.

Jeff Schwartz: The Device That Changed the Conversation

Jeff Schwartz owns four restaurants in Chicago. He came to me at 42 with a testosterone of 380 and an HRV of 22 – the lowest intake HRV I have ever recorded. His morning cortisol was 28 mcg/dL. He had not taken a real vacation in five years.

Jeff was already using a Garmin Forerunner before we started working together. His data showed what his life looked like – body battery consistently depleted by 10am, HRV low every morning without exception, sleep efficiency in the low 80s. The Garmin was collecting the evidence but Jeff did not know how to read it. The data was sitting in an app he checked occasionally and did not connect to his hormonal state.

The intervention was behavioral before it was supplemental. I forced him to take an actual vacation in month two – five days completely unplugged. His HRV jumped 14 points by day four. The Garmin body battery was fully charged on the morning of day three, a reading he told me he had never seen before. He photographed the screen and sent it to me.

The device did not fix Jeff’s cortisol problem. It made the problem undeniable and gave us a daily measurement to track the recovery. He now checks his Garmin body battery every morning the way he checks his restaurant P&L – as an operational input that determines what the day looks like. His HRV climbed from 22 to 46 over eleven months. His testosterone climbed to 590.

For Jeff, the Garmin was the right choice because he was not going to wear a separate ring and already ran with GPS tracking. One device that does most of what he needs, without subscription complexity. He is not using it for precise sleep stage data – he is using it for HRV trending, recovery state, and training load. For that use case, Garmin is excellent.

Bruce Lassiter: The Travel Problem

Bruce Lassiter is a 44-year-old commercial pilot based in Atlanta who flew international routes. His circadian rhythm was systematically destroyed by jet lag across a 15-year career. His HRV when we started was 28. His testosterone was 350.

Bruce needed a device that worked in every time zone, survived constant travel, and gave him data he could act on during layovers in cities he might spend 14 hours in before flying home. He is wearing an Oura Ring Gen 4, which I recommended specifically because it requires no charging during a normal day, fits easily under gloves in cold climates, and does not need a GPS-enabled workout to produce meaningful recovery data.

The Oura gave us something specific and valuable for Bruce: we could see the HRV difference between different layover cities, different flight durations, and different recovery protocols. The Tokyo rotation produced consistently lower HRV scores than the Frankfurt rotation despite similar time-zone shifts – we eventually traced this to layover length differences. That insight was only possible because we had consistent, granular data across dozens of rotation cycles.

I built Bruce’s protocol around what the Oura was telling us. He carries magnesium glycinate, a precise melatonin protocol calibrated to his specific rotation schedule, and an Apollo Neuro vibration device he runs on the parasympathetic setting during layovers. For Bruce, the Oura + Apollo Neuro combination solved a problem the Garmin could not – passive sleep tracking without workout logging and the Apollo giving him an active recovery tool. Travel-specific wearable stacking is a real consideration that most wearable reviews ignore entirely.

Patrick Sullivan: Shift Work and the Whoop

Patrick Sullivan works 24-on, 48-off rotations as a paramedic in Boston. The 24-hour shift means his sleep on shift nights is fragmented, his cortisol pattern is disrupted, and any sleep tracker needs to make sense of sleep that happens in chunks between calls rather than in a single overnight block.

I recommended Whoop for Patrick specifically because Whoop handles non-standard sleep windows better than Oura does. Oura is built around a single overnight sleep period. Whoop tracks strain and recovery continuously and can incorporate nap data into its recovery calculation more cleanly. For someone sleeping in four 90-minute blocks during a 24-hour shift, Whoop’s approach to cumulative recovery made more practical sense.

The Whoop strain score also became a useful training gate for Patrick. I had him set a rule: no strength training on days when his recovery score was below 50. That rule alone reduced the accumulated fatigue that had been blunting his testosterone recovery. He stopped trying to force training sessions on days when his body was clearly not ready for them. HRV climbed from 28 to 48 over five months. Testosterone climbed from 410 to 580.

Patrick also uses Whoop because it has no screen, which matters in a high-stimulus job environment. He checks his score on his phone in the morning, makes his training decision, and the watch stays invisible for the rest of the day. For a man who is already stimulus-saturated at work, a glanceable screen on his wrist would be another input. The absence of that screen is a feature for his specific situation.

The Eight Sleep Pod: The Device I Recommend After Everything Else is Dialed

The Eight Sleep Pod 4 is a water-cooled mattress cover that regulates bed temperature throughout the night, dropping during deep sleep and rising toward wake time. Temperature regulation during sleep is one of the more evidence-backed sleep interventions – the body needs to drop 2-3 degrees Fahrenheit to enter and maintain deep sleep, and maintaining a cool sleep environment facilitates that drop. The Eight Sleep does this automatically.

I recommend it to clients who have already optimized everything else and are looking for marginal gains on deep sleep. It costs $2,200. It is not the first thing anyone should buy. But in the small number of clients I have referred to it – primarily men who live in climates where nighttime temperature is hard to control or who sleep hot – the deep sleep improvement has been real and consistent. Ron Males uses one and mentions it occasionally when the sleep optimization discussion comes up with clients who are past the basics.

Do not buy this before buying a basic ring tracker. Do not buy this before fixing alcohol, screen time, sleep schedule consistency, and bedroom darkness. The Eight Sleep amplifies a good sleep environment. It does not substitute for one.

Wearable Accuracy: What the Devices Get Right and Wrong

I want to be direct about this because wearable marketing is aggressively misleading about accuracy.

HRV: Consumer wearables are reasonably accurate for HRV trending when the measurement is taken passively overnight with consistent methodology. The Oura, Whoop, and Garmin Fenix all produce HRV numbers that correlate meaningfully with clinical ECG-based measurements on a trend basis. The absolute number will differ from a clinical measurement. The trend – whether your HRV is going up or down over two weeks – is reliable enough to act on.

Sleep stages: This is where consumer devices are weakest relative to gold-standard polysomnography (a clinical sleep lab measurement that records brain waves, muscle activity, and eye movements to identify sleep stages with high accuracy). Consumer devices use accelerometer and optical heart rate data to infer sleep stages. Oura is the most accurate consumer device I am aware of for deep sleep estimation, but its absolute deep sleep numbers can be 15-20% different from a clinical measurement. The trend – whether deep sleep is improving or declining over weeks – is reliable. The claim “I got 94 minutes of deep sleep last night” should be interpreted as an estimate, not a precise measurement.

Resting heart rate: Very accurate on all major devices. Optical heart rate measurement at rest is a solved problem.

Training load: Whoop’s strain score is the most sophisticated commercial implementation. Garmin’s training load is also solid. Oura’s activity tracking is adequate but not the device’s strength.

My Actual Recommendations By Client Profile

For most men starting out: Oura Ring Gen 4. It is the best passive sleep and HRV tracker available, requires minimal active engagement (no workout logging required to generate useful data), and produces the sleep quality metrics I care about most. The ring form factor is less obtrusive than a watch for overnight use. Start here.

For men who train seriously and want training load context: Add Whoop to the Oura, or use Whoop standalone. The strain-to-recovery integration is genuinely useful for managing training load in a way that protects testosterone. The subscription model is irritating but the capability is worth it for serious training clients.

For men who travel frequently and need durability: Garmin Fenix series. The battery life and GPS capability make it the most practical device for men who are constantly moving. Less sleep-stage accuracy, but the HRV trending is solid and one device for everything has real practical value.

For men who want to add active recovery support: Apollo Neuro after the ring is established. The vagal tone stimulation during high-stress periods or layovers is a real if modest intervention. Do not spend money on it before the passive tracking is in place.

For men ready to optimize the sleep environment: Eight Sleep Pod 4, after everything else is dialed. Last on the list, significant impact for the right person.

What Wearables Cannot Do

A wearable cannot tell you your testosterone level. It cannot diagnose a thyroid problem. It cannot catch the elevated reverse T3 that is suppressing your free T3 conversion and explaining why your energy is poor despite adequate total thyroid hormone. It cannot see high SHBG or low DHEA-S or an elevated fasting insulin that is suppressing hepatic SHBG production.

Wearables are the daily signal between bloodwork draws. The bloodwork is the ground truth. The complete hormone panel tells you what is actually happening. The wearable tells you whether what is happening is getting better or worse and whether the protocol is working. Both are necessary. Neither replaces the other.
