Boron: The $8 Mineral That Unlocks Free Testosterone (And Why Nobody Markets It)

Aaron Pell walked into our first session with bloodwork that would make most GPs smile. Total testosterone at 720 ng/dL. That’s a number a lot of men in their 30s would be happy to see. His doctor had looked at it and said everything was fine.

But somehow Aaron didn’t feel fine. He felt like he was running at about 60%. Slow recovery. Brain fog. Motivation tracking downward despite what he described as a genuinely good life – married, planning for a first kid, career in a good place. He’d been brushed off because his headline number looked good, and he was starting to wonder if this was just what 31 felt like.

I ran the fuller panel. Free testosterone calculated at 8.4 pg/mL – well below where I want to see a 31-year-old. SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin, the protein that binds testosterone in the blood and renders it biologically unavailable) at 78 nmol/L – high end of range, significantly elevated for his age. Thyroid mildly suppressed. Magnesium intake from diet effectively zero.

The total T number was misleading because most of it was bound. It was like having $720 in the bank but $620 of it frozen in an account you can’t access. The 720 was real but unavailable. The number that actually drove how he felt – free T – was low because SHBG was high and eating into his usable testosterone.

Boron was the central intervention in what ultimately fixed Aaron’s situation, alongside magnesium glycinate. I want to explain why, and what I’ve seen across other clients where SHBG elevation was the core problem.

What boron actually does

Boron is a trace mineral found primarily in fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Most men eating processed food diets – and many eating generally decent diets that happen to be low in the relevant foods – run low on it. It doesn’t get the attention of zinc or magnesium despite doing something that neither of those does particularly well: it reduces SHBG and modulates estradiol downward, which frees up a meaningful amount of testosterone that was previously bound.

The mechanism isn’t completely mapped in the literature, but the clinical picture is consistent: boron supplementation at meaningful doses reduces SHBG, reduces estradiol somewhat, and the net effect is more free and bioavailable testosterone without any change in total T production.

For men where SHBG suppression is the problem – as it was with Aaron – this is the right lever.

What boron is not: a production stimulant. It doesn’t push LH higher or tell the Leydig cells to produce more testosterone. If total T is genuinely low due to primary hypogonadism or lifestyle suppression, boron won’t fix that.

The men it helps are specifically those where total T is reasonable but SHBG is eating the usable fraction.

That’s a surprisingly large group – I see it regularly in lean, fit men in their 30s who have elevated SHBG from thyroid suboptimality, caloric restriction history, or just genetic disposition.

There’s also a vitamin D absorption interaction that I find clinically useful. Boron appears to enhance D3 conversion at some enzymatic step, which means men who run boron alongside D3 often see a stronger vitamin D response than D3 alone. This is part of why I sequence boron after the foundation stack rather than running it alongside – I want the D3 and magnesium established first, then boron added as a targeted second step.

The dosing reality

The disconnect between how boron is typically dosed and how it needs to be dosed to move bloodwork is significant.

Most multivitamins contain 1-3mg of boron. Typical dietary intake for an average modern diet is probably in that range. At these doses, you’re maintaining baseline, not doing anything meaningful to SHBG.

The dosing I’ve found moves bloodwork consistently in clients with elevated SHBG: 9-12mg daily. This is what I gave Aaron. One client in a similar profile – Trevor Halsey, structural engineer, 36, methodical guy who wanted the “optimal protocol” – started at 9mg and we saw meaningful SHBG movement at 8 weeks. His SHBG dropped from 62 to 44, and his free T came up proportionally. He told me he expected to need something more complex. He was somewhat annoyed that the answer was an $8 mineral.

The form matters. Boron citrate and boron glycinate are the two I use. Both absorb well. Boron oxide is poorly absorbed. Some research showing effects used calcium fructoborate, which is another reasonably absorbed form, but citrate and glycinate are more commonly available and perform well in my client tracking. I’m not dogmatic about which of the two you pick – both work.

Cycling is worth discussing. There’s a minority opinion in the community that boron should be cycled to prevent excessive estradiol suppression. My practical experience: at the 9-12mg range, estradiol suppression is mild and I haven’t seen it crash into problematic territory with continuous use. Some clients prefer a 5-weeks-on, 1-week-off approach just to be conservative, which is reasonable. What I’ve seen in clients who run it continuously for months without cycling: generally fine, with occasional cases where estradiol dropped lower than ideal and joints got uncomfortably dry. If that happens, either reduce dose or cycle off for two weeks.

The data from the user community supports the clinical picture. A common report I see: SHBG reduction of 15-25% over 8-12 weeks at 6-9mg, with free T increases roughly proportional. Some men see more, some less. The subset who are non-responders usually have other factors driving the SHBG elevation – thyroid being the most common – that boron alone can’t address.

Aaron’s full case

I want to go back to Aaron here because his case is detailed enough to be instructive, and he’s the reason I think about SHBG as carefully as I do.

When we ran his fuller panel, thyroid TSH was 3.4 – technically in range, but free T3 was at the low end of normal. Subclinical thyroid suppression is one of the reliable drivers of SHBG elevation – thyroid hormones modulate SHBG synthesis in the liver, and when they’re low-normal, SHBG tends to run high. This wasn’t severe hypothyroidism; it was the kind of mild thyroid suboptimality that standard GP panels often miss because TSH was in range.

We addressed it through thyroid support nutrients: selenium, zinc (already in his foundation stack from the deficiency correction), iodine-containing foods. I didn’t put him on thyroid medication – that wasn’t warranted. We also added magnesium glycinate, which has direct effects on SHBG reduction through its own mechanism, and boron citrate at 9mg.

Four months in: SHBG down from 78 to 48. Free T up from 8.4 to 21.2 pg/mL. Aaron’s words: “I had the bloodwork of a 25-year-old and felt like a 60-year-old. I needed a coach who’d look past the headline number.”

His wife got pregnant at month eight. He mentions this without prompting in most conversations I have with him.

The point of Aaron’s story isn’t that boron is magic. It’s that the right intervention for his specific presentation – SHBG-driven low free T with mild thyroid involvement – was a combination of cheap, foundational minerals, not an exotic herbal stack. He had spent months considering tongkat ali before we talked. Tongkat ali may have helped mildly. It would not have moved SHBG 30 points in four months.

Who benefits and who doesn’t

Boron is most useful for men whose profile looks like this:

  • Total T in the normal to good range (roughly 450-800)
  • Free T lower than expected relative to total T
  • SHBG elevated (above 45-50 nmol/L is where I start paying attention; above 60 is definitely a flag)
  • Estradiol in the mid-to-high range of normal

If total T is genuinely low – below 350, or even below 400 in symptomatic men – boron may be part of the picture, but it’s not the primary lever. The primary suppressor in those cases is usually lifestyle-related: sleep, body composition, cortisol load, zinc/D3 deficiency. Fix those first. Trevor is the secondary case here. He’s methodical by nature and kept wanting to modify the protocol before we had enough data. I made him run the full 90-day stack unchanged – boron at 9mg, magnesium glycinate already established, D3 and zinc in place – before any changes. He hated it. He texted me optimization ideas at week 3. I told him to stop. By month four he’d stopped texting ideas because the numbers were moving and he had nothing to complain about.

His SHBG dropped from 62 to 44. His free T came up. His recovery improved noticeably. The complexity he was looking for wasn’t what his situation required. He eventually told me “I wanted complexity because I thought complexity was the answer. It was the obstacle.” I’ve used that line with other clients since.

Why nobody markets this properly

Boron costs almost nothing. A 90-day supply of 9mg boron glycinate capsules from a quality brand runs under $15. There is no meaningful margin in it. You cannot build a supplement brand on a product that costs $15 for three months.

Compare that to the branded herbal extracts, the standardized tongkat ali extracts with the exotic-sounding active compound names, the multi-ingredient blends with six different herbs and a Latin species name on every line. The margin structure there supports advertising spend, influencer partnerships, podcast sponsorships. Boron supports none of that at its natural price point.

The result is that a mineral which reliably moves SHBG and free testosterone in the right population is systematically undermarketed while herbs with weaker evidence in healthy men dominate the ad spend. This is not a conspiracy. It’s just how supplement economics work.

The practical advice: if your SHBG is elevated and your free T is lower than your total T suggests it should be, add boron citrate or glycinate at 9-12mg daily to your existing foundation stack. Run it for at least 8 weeks before assessing. Test SHBG before and after. The result will tell you whether this is a meaningful lever for your specific situation. For Aaron, it was the most important single supplement in his protocol. For someone without SHBG elevation, it will be less impactful. Bloodwork tells you which category you’re in.

At the price point boron sits at, the cost of running this experiment is trivial. The information you get from it is not.
